Unlike the Tarot the Lenormand cards work with pairs. Of course you can have a single card for a daily draw as a focus card for the day and meditate on it. This is a perfect way to practice the meaning of the cards and can be very useful later when you take your first shot on the Grand Tableau.
The set of two cards can be used for a quick draw and we use the pairs in every kind of spreads. You can read the first card as the subject and the card next to it is the adjective, it describes the first card.
You can have three or five cards for a detailed answer. The focus card is in the middle, all the other cards describe this focus card. What matters is the intention before laying out the cards. If you decide that you want to read the cards from left to right as what will happen in a timely order, you can do that too.
The box of 9 cards can give an answer to complex questions. Many layers can be discussed here. You can choose a focus card (1) in advance if you would like to emphasis the topic of the reading (for love choose the Heart, for finances choose the Fish etc.). I personally find that by setting our intention, the cards know what is important in our question and a relevant card will be laid in the middle every time. You read the columns as past, present, future and the rows as dreams, reality, root of the situation. You can knight the cards, mirror them if you want to get more information. Here is a layout of the 9 card box:
Grand tableau 8×4 + 4 extra fate cards
The Grand tableau is a complex layout of the cards. It is usually laid out for a longer period of time, like a month, 6 months or a year. It gives answers on life’s topics as love, career, health, children…
